The first spray tans were developed in the 1960s by a German scientist named Eva Wittgenstein. She created a lotion that contained dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that reacts with the amino acids in the outer layer of the skin to produce a brown color. The lotion was applied to the skin using an airbrush, creating a smooth, even tan.

In the 1970s, a New York-based company called Electrolysis and Beauty Center started using a similar technique to spray tan clients. They used a handheld spray gun that sprayed the DHA lotion onto the skin, and the process quickly became popular among the company’s clients.

In the 1980s, spray tans began to gain mainstream popularity. Tanning salons across the United States began offering spray tans as an alternative to traditional tanning methods, which were known to be harmful to the skin. The early spray tan solutions were often criticized for leaving an orange or streaky color, but the technology continued to improve.

In the 1990s, Mystic Tan introduced a spray tanning booth that used a spray gun to evenly distribute the DHA solution over the body. The booth also had a drying cycle that helped to reduce the chance of streaking. This technology quickly became popular, and Mystic Tan became a household name.
